What it Really Takes to Install Basement Carpeting
A lot of people would give a lot to install basement carpeting. You should always keep in mind though that the basement is not the same as any other room in the house. Installing a carpet in it can present certain unique challenges that you would have to hurdle.
Detecting Moisture Problems
One major problem that can affect basement design is moisture. As most people know, the basement is the most prone to moisture and even extensive water seepage because it is located underground. If water and moisture is a major problem in your basement, you would have to find ways to resolve it first before you install a carpet. Obviously, the presence of moisture can ruin your carpet and support the growth of microbes. Aside from making your basement a magnet for bad odor, molds and mildew can affect your health.
Detecting moisture can be easy if the problem is visually obvious. Some basements however only have minimal moisture issues that can be hard to spot. You can detect the problem by taping a piece of transparent plastic on your floor. If the cement darkens, this is a sign that moisture is already beginning to collect underneath the plastic.
Creating Basement Barriers
Basement carpeting can work well if you install moisture barriers. The kind of barrier that you would have to settle for however would depend on the extent of the moisture problem. In some cases, putting a soundboard made of cellulose underneath the carpet padding can sufficiently stop moisture from reaching your carpet. In more serious cases of moisture seepage however, extensive layering may be required. Before you can lay out a carpet, you may have to install polyethylene plastic, wood board and mold resistant foam.
Selecting Carpets that Work
Not all carpet types are ideal for basement carpeting. Any carpet for example that has pads that are partially made of organic material or absorbent fabric can spell disaster. It goes without saying that these carpets will draw in moisture and can encourage mold and mildew formation. Settle only for carpets that have non-porous, inorganic pads. It is also usually a good idea to pick carpets that have been pre treated with anti microbial chemicals.
One excellent type of carpet for any type of basement construction idea is carpet tiles. These tiles typically do not have pads that are prone to molding. The bottoms of these tiles are specifically made to resist water damage and mold or mildew formation. If in case water still manages to get through, tiles are easier to remove and replace than full length carpets.
Other Drying Solutions
Get rid of moisture problems that can ruin your carpet by creating a dry environment. One piece of equipment you should always invest in for your basement space is a dehumidifier. You can also install ceiling fans to help keep things dry.
Basement carpeting is no problem if you can deal with moisture issues. Its crucial to remember though that you cannot deal with every issue on your own. If there is simply too much water in your basement, you will need a remodeling expert to deal with it.
