It may be a great idea to dive into basement construction. With the right plan, you can get rid of your old, dark and damp storage room by creating a recreational center that every member of your family can enjoy. Before you get right down to the task though, there are several construction problems that you may have to address first.

#1- Cramped Space

One top obstacle in basement design is cramped space. Many basements are originally intended to be used as storage rooms for things that are no longer useful. Hence, space is not a concern until you decide to remodel. You can take care of this issue if you settle for small or slim furniture and gadgets. Free up more space by using bean bags, floor-hugging mini couches, bar stools and slim electronic entertainment sets. Create the illusion of having more space by using light paint on your walls and ceiling.

It would also help to select a single theme instead of converting your basement into a multi-purpose room. Obviously, having one purpose in mind will limit the components that you will be including in your basement. Depending on your preference, your basement can be transformed into a basement bar, game center, laundry room, living room or bedroom.

#2- Exposed Pipes and Wires

Initial basement construction designs may also pay little attention to exposed pipes and wires. After all, not every homeowner plans to keep guests in the basement. Even if you only plan on having a private family room, seeing exposed pipes and wires can affect your mood. You can deal with this by installing a drywall ceiling or a drop ceiling. Drywall ceiling types in particular can be made extra attractive by painting over them. You can pick a mix of colors or you can even paint a mural on your ceiling.

#3- Damp Basements

Water or moisture seepage is another issue that affects a lot of basements because of their position underground. Moisture can enter a basement through the walls or through the floor. This can damage electronic equipment, decorative elements and furniture. Moreover, moisture can lead to mold and mildew formation which can be harmful to your health. This issue is often resolved by installing additional wall and floor boards composed of layers of plastic, wood and treated foam. Some basements however may require more elaborate solutions such as creating a drainage system.

#4- No Natural Light Source

Basement construction plans can also skip natural light sources. This is obviously because it may not be possible for you to install windows. The lack of natural light can make your room seem more unwelcoming, restrictive and small. You can compensate for this by installing decorative light fixtures that are sources of bright light. Lights in particular can further support the illusion that you have more space than there really is.

Basement construction is not as straightforward as you would like it to be. You should really see this as good news though. Dealing with existing basement issues is the best way to save your property from damage and create an ideal space that you will always enjoy.
