You may not think much about basement decorating. This is especially if you use your basement as a dumping ground for anything and everything that you want to keep out of your sight. You should seriously consider this option though because sprucing up your basement can mean a lot to your well-being.

Why its a Good Idea

A little basement decorating will do you no harm. On the contrary, it can do you a lot of good. Instead of keeping a dark and useless room you can convert your basement into functional space. If you don’t have a decent laundry room for example, you can make one in your basement so you can organize clothes cleaning and ironing better. You can also settle for an extra bedroom for guests or for other family members if you have a growing family.

Basements are more than just functional spaces. You can also implement a basement design idea that is intended for entertaining guests or family members. If you want a safe and totally relaxing spot to cool your heels in after a days work, you can convert your basement into a bar, game room or audio visual entertainment center.

Decorating vs. Remodeling

Basement decorating can be a misleading term. What many homeowners really want is to remodel their basements. Decorating simply involves throwing in a few pieces of furniture, electronic devices and decorative elements. Remodeling however may mean actual carpentry, electrical or plumbing work depending on the extent of your plan.

Remodeling however is rarely a straightforward affair. This is especially if your basement has serious problems. Before you can start adding new features and elements to your basement, problems such as moisture, wall cracks, low ceilings and exposed wires need to be addressed.

You might be able to save on remodeling costs by performing some remodeling and repair work yourself. Bear in mind though that the required basement work can be so extensive that you may not know how to deal with them using safe and standard procedures. You may have little choice but to hire a contractor to fix problems and to check which basement designs will work best for your available space.

Affordable Options

Without a doubt, basement decorating is more affordable and safer to perform by yourself than remodeling. This doesn’t mean though that you’ll end up with a less impressive space if you settle only for integrating a few decorative elements. If you are fairly certain that your basement has no serious problems, you can move on to picking affordable decorative ideas. Painting your walls is obviously a far cheaper option than replacing your existing walls. You can also add throw rugs instead of installing expensive treated carpeting. For entertainment, settle for low tables and board games instead of billiard tables. Pick bean bags, pillows or ottomans instead of new couches.

Basement decorating doesn’t have to break the bank. If you choose and apply the right components and elements, you can have a room that you can enjoy even if you do not opt for full remodeling.
