Basement Design Ideas for Homeowners on a Budget
Many basement design ideas cost a lot. This shouldn’t stop you though from getting your dream basement. Whether you want an electronic entertainment center or a family friendly bar, there are affordable ideas that anyone can take advantage of.
Wall and Ceiling Paint
Painting the basement ceiling and walls is one of the best ways to give your basement a totally fresh look. If you have a very small basement, settle for light colors so you can create the impression that you have a wider space available. If you want to have a more interesting look, you can go beyond single or even double colors. You can go one step higher by painting a mural over your walls and ceiling. This can be a particularly good idea if you have kids who can appreciate colorful visual elements most.
Ready Made Parts
Basement cost for remodeling can be steep if you choose to build every section or part of your basement from scratch. Aside from materials, you also need to pay for labor if you do not intend to work on your basement yourself. Labor on remodeling projects is often more expensive than material cost. You might be able to save however if you buy ready-made components such as hanging cabinets and shelves. Some stores even sell affordable dry bars that you can conveniently set in place.
Rugs and Carpet Tiles
Basement design ideas often include floor details. One popular feature in a lot of remodeled basements is carpeting. Obviously though, this is not a very cost saving feature. Ordinary carpets are expensive on their own. Installing them on a basement would mean you need to find expensive moisture and mold resistant carpets. You would also have to spend on plastic and wood layers designed to prevent moisture seepage. Once a carpet gets damaged, you may have to throw out your entire carpet to stop the spread of odor and molds.
Instead of buying a carpet, buy carpet tiles instead. Although these can be quite expensive too, you only have to get rid of individual tiles in case damage sets in so you end up saving on the overall cost of tiles. Even more cost effective floor elements are rugs. Like carpet tiles you can easily take out and replace individual rugs.
Drop Ceiling
Ceilings can be of the drywall or drop type. Both can come at a cost but simple, single panel drop ceilings are often less expensive than full drywalls. Aside from being an affordable ceiling option, drop ceilings also give better access to wires and pipes when repairs need to be performed.
Light Fixtures
Lights are important basement design ideas. Various light fixtures that can be attached to the ceiling or walls can have double functions. Aside from providing bright light that can contribute to creating the impression of spaciousness, they can also serve as natural decorative elements depending on their designs.
There are many basement design ideas for basements of all types. Although many ideas are costly, there are creative ways of reducing decorating and remodeling costs. You just have to use your imagination.
